The basics

If you know a member of the LGBTQ+ community, you still might not know what all the letters mean.

Our fast facts can help you to support the fair treatment of the whole LGBTQ+ community.

Did you know: In the UK, LGBT people are protected from unfair treatment by law, alongside other ‘protected characteristics’ thanks to the 2010 Equality act.

LGBTQ+ is one of a few acronyms which represent a broad range of people.

LGBTQ+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer and ‘Plus’ which helps to include other groups, like gender non-binary (‘enby’) people.

Why is sharing my pronouns important?

Lots of people now share their pronouns ('he', 'her', 'they') in social media profiles, work emails and even LinkedIn, it might be hard to understand why.

Sharing these is a small thing you can do, to help someone struggling with their gender identity or being ‘misgendered’ based on their name or appearance.

If Pride isn’t just a party, what is it?

Pride is in lots of people’s calendars, not just those who identify as LGBTQ+. It's both a protest and a celebration - a moment for the community our allies to be visible, in public spaces.

The first ever Pride happened in June 28, 1970 - a year to the day, after a police raid on an a bar called the Stonewall Inn caused a riot (known as ‘the Stonewall riots’).

What is the ‘progress' Pride flag?

The recognisable rainbow flag was created in Gilbert Baker, in 1978. LGBTQ+ people and our allies use flags as an outward symbol of identity or support. A lot like football fans might.

In 2021, Deliveroo made the decision to use Daniel Quasar’s updated flag, which visualises support for often-underrepresented groups within Pride. The ‘progress’ Pride flag features colours representing black and brown, trans and non-binary members of the community.
